5 USAAF ACES VERSIONS: Maj. George E. Preddy, Lt. Col. John C. Meyer, Capt. John J. Voll, Maj. Richard “Pete” Peterson, Maj. Leonard “Kit” Carson

The North American P-51 Mustang is undoubtedly one of the most iconic aircraft in military aviation history and is widely regarded as the best piston-engine fighter of World War II.

The P-51 was developed in a remarkably short time and was built around the Packard V-12 engine, capable of delivering over 1,600 horsepower, allowing the Mustang to exceed 700 km/h. The P-51D, the most widely produced variant, was armed with six 12.7 mm Browning machine guns mounted in the wings. It was extensively employed on the European front, primarily escorting bomber formations but also serving as a fighter-bomber for ground attack missions. The Mustang was flown by some of the most renowned American aces of World War II, who showcased its exceptional performance and operational capabilities.

The Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera RSR was built in 1974 in four specimens to take part in the racing season of the World Constructors Championship.

Thus it was possible to witness the participation of the factory with one and sometimes two cars under the colors of the Martini Racing Team, and entrusted to the official crews Muller – van Lennep and Koinigg – Schurti. Despite having almost equal power (about 500 hp) to that of rival cars, the Porsches did not have the lightness or handling of the latter, which ran in the Prototype category. However, a fortunate combination of speed and reliability made it possible to achieve respectable results in the nine races on the calendar, including two second places: one at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and one at the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen.

The Ford Escort Mk 2 was launched in 1975.

It was a significant evolution compared to the Escort Mk 1 that debuted at Brussels Motor Show in January 1968. It used the reliable mechanical components as the Mk 1 but adopted a new design based on a squared-style look able to be in line with the aesthetic and stylistic taste of the 70s. The product range was wide, declined in three body styles (2 doors, 4 doors and 3 doors station wagon), five type of engines and a significant variety of settings and configurations. The Escort Mk 2 was mainly produced in the Ford Group German plants and achieved a good commercial success. In addition to the more classic version, it was also released the Escort Sport version characterized by a more aggressive look and distinctive sport interiors. To compete, successfully, in World Rally Championship, a dedicated model, the RS 1800, was introduced to complete the line up. Successful results has been achieved. The team Waldegård Björn – Thorszelius Hans, that got the second place in the Wordl-famous Monte Carlo Rally in 1979, won the World Rally Championship at the end of the year. The Motosport team also achieved excellent results with the other team, ranked fifth in the Monaco 1979 sport event, formed by Mikkola Hannu and Hertz Arnee.

The Jaguar XJ 220 became famous for its top speed amongst series production cars, attaining 350 km / h, a record which was held from 1992 and 1994.

The inception of the XJ220 is unusual insofar as it originated from the ideas and creativity of Jaguar employees. Some staff worked on innovative and original projects outside of the scope of routine commercial considerations. A working group called “The Saturday Club” brought about the creation of a “concept car”, which was presented at the British Motor Show in 1988, generating critical public acclaim. From this initial developmental work, the Jaguar XJ 220 emerged, with the release of the first production vehicle in 1991. Lightweight, and an extremely powerful car, it had the performance characteristics of a truly “top sports car”, and was recognisable for its aerodynamic design and extremely modern lines for the period. International rock stars and wealthy businessmen were keen buyers of this prestigious vehicle.

Starting from the great success of the C.R. 32 “Freccia” biplane, which proved its reliability and operational efficiency during the Spanish Civil War, Fiat developed the new C.R. 42 “Falco” at the end of the 1930s.

The new single-seat biplane fighter retained the fixed landing gear and open cockpit of its predecessor but introduced several innovations, such as an entirely aluminum and steel structure covered with metal and fabric. Its air-cooled radial engine, the Fiat A.74, allowed the C.R. 42 to reach a top speed of 400 km/h. The aircraft was characterized by exceptional maneuverability, highly appreciated by pilots, but suffered from the inherent limitations of the biplane configuration, which hindered its operational performance compared to more modern and powerful monoplane fighters. A dedicated Night Fighter version was produced, featuring extended exhausts to reduce visibility to the enemy during nighttime operations.

CONTAINS 9 FIGURES

Designed at the beginning of the Second World War, the Crusader was one of the most important British “Cruiser” tanks reaching a production of over 5,000 units.

Equipped with Christie suspension with large diameter rolling wheels, the Crusader possessed remarkable driving skills on rough terrain. The first versions of Mk. I and Mk. II were armed with a 2 pdr cannon. later replaced by the more powerful 6 pdr cannon. in the Mk.III version. Lacking adequate armor against enemy fire, it was also very vulnerable to enemy mines and anti-tank guns, and its armament was often inadequate in front of similar German vehicles. However, when used in a coordinated way, they managed to achieve good results.

To compete in the FIA-Group 5 car competitions, Porsche developed a special car line characterized by dedicated engine and chassis solutions, beginning with the production of the famous 911 Turbo.

Several versions of this model were made, but one of the most famous was the Porsche 935J. The “Baby” as it was known, was built to compete in the 2.0-liter German national championship (Deutsche Rennwagen Meisterschaft). It adopted a lighter chassis for this competition thanks to the use of a tubular aluminum space frame. This solution enabled the vehicle to have an overall weight of 735 kg which was in line with competition weight requirements. The car used a 1.425 air-cooled engine with a power performance of 261Kw. The Porsche 935J achieved an important victory in the 1977 German Grand Prix held in Hockenheim, that proved its excellent engine performance and design features.

M-47 Patton medium tank was developed and deployed to U.S. armored units in the early 1950s.

Compared to its predecessors, such as the M-46, it exhibited significantly improved performance, featuring enhanced protection and increased firepower, provided by the turret-mounted 90mm M3 gun. The tank had a combat weight of approximately 46 tons and was powered by a high-performance Continental 12-cylinder V-type air-cooled engine delivering 810 hp, enabling a top speed of 45 km/h. Beyond the United States, the M-47 was widely used by various NATO armies throughout the Cold War. It proved to be a reliable and robust platform, remaining in service with several European armored units until the 1980s. Additionally, it saw combat in multiple operational theaters, ranging from the Middle East to the Indo-Pakistani conflict.
