Tips on buying an outdoor table tennis table!
Tips on buying an outdoor table tennis table

So you are thinking you’d like to bring some fun to your backyard with a table tennis table, but your decision process has just begun. You will need to know the differences between indoor and outdoor table tennis tables, spacing and what equipment you are going to need.  And that’s where we come in. Here are some quick tips on picking the perfect outdoor table and making sure it lasts.

1)   Why outdoor table tennis is amazing?
Despite the weather, outdoor table tennis or “ping-pong” has really surged in popularity. It is played more for fun mainly due to the disadvantages of weather – wind, rain and/or a high humidex, can often put a damper on your next outdoor ping-pong match, but, when the sun is out, outdoor table tennis can be a blast. When the weather isn’t cooperating a table can easily be rolled into the garage for a game or used indoors.

2)   What’s the difference?
Both Indoor and outdoor table tennis tables are the same width, the same length and the same height; the big difference is the material. Indoor tables are wood. Outdoor tables surfaces are generally either aluminum or a composite material finished with a coating to protect the table from sun, rain and wind. Outdoor tables also tend to have sturdier frames, which adds a little to the overall cost.

3)   Where should I put this?
Once you have decided on the table that best fits your needs, you are going to want to figure out where it should go. Ideally, you need an even surface when setting up your table outside. You could set up on a patio area or a flat grass area. You can often adjust the leg heights to even up the table, so even if the surface isn’t completely flat, you can still make the table top relatively level. Some wind protection can help. If you can position the table near a garden fence or the side of the house it will reduce some of the impact of the wind. You will also want to make sure you have enough space around the table. The table length is 9 feet (2.74 metres) and the table width is 5 feet (1.525 metres). You will need a minimum of 5 steps back from the end of the table and 2 or 3 steps to the side of the table to have enough room to play.

4)   What else do I need?
Don’t forget you will need bats and balls which are often sold separately. As for ping-pong bats you are going to want something that is plastic, durable and won’t be destroyed if they are left outside. The Kettler Halo or Stiga Flo rackets are made from a type of resin that is resistant to weathering for durability. We also recommend Stiga Outdoor Balls specially made to minimize wind resistance and are extremely tough and durable.

5)   Protect it!
Finally, a word about protecting your table. Even though outdoor table tennis tables are made of materials to survive outdoor weather conditions, they are not indestructible! If you leave the table unprotected all year round, you will experience some deterioration. Make sure you fold up your table at the end of every use and use a proper water resistant cover. Kettler's UV resistant cover is a specially engineered weatherproof material to provide a barrier against rain, snow, dirt, sun, mould and mildew. This cover features tough reinforced corners, built-in air vents on the top of the cover and easy Velcro side openings.
All our tables fold up and can be rolled easily into the garage or a shed for winter storage or why not use it inside in the winter months.

Arrange your next neighbourhood ping pong tournament and have some fun!
